“I absolve you”
flickers in tandem with scenes on the TV screen.
Light from the screen casts your silhouette on the deific sofa
in achromatic black and white.
With eyes glued to scenes from Sin City
you customarily reckon your sins
committed since last Sunday’s sermon.
Before next Sunday service you must remember
the names and numbers of your unbiblical adventures
if you are to seek absolution for those
to the magnanimous priest.
You go to church enthusiastically,
ask forgiveness after weekly confession;
and gladly the godly priest pronounces, “Ego te absolvo”.
You come out of the church unburdened and enthused
and get ready for the ensuing scenes
before the next week sermon and Sin City.
